Baby girl turned one this past week. We hosted a Unicorn Themed Tea Party to celebrate her first year of life. The menu centered around desserts and appetizers/finger foods. It was honestly adorable! We had multi-color rice krispy treats, cake balls, and chocolate covered pretzels. Pinterest had great ideas for rainbow/unicorn desserts. But it's pretty hard to find actual foods that fit the theme. In addition to cheese and crackers, we borrowed from some tea party go-to foods. We served mini chicken salad sandwiches with home-made chicken salad! DELICIOUS! We had 3 varieties of mini-quiches as well, which are super easy to make!

A couple of months ago, my mom was telling me about these chocolate chip cookies from her childhood that her grandma used to make and keep in a cookie jar on her countertop. After some digging, we managed to find the recipe and tweak it exactly how she remembers it. She talked about how her grandma always had these cookies on hand. They would eat and just talk. A sweet and simple memory that has lasted decades. Isn’t it insane how a food can be so connected to a memory? I’ve been making my great-grandmother’s chocolate chip cookie recipe on and off for a couple of weeks now trying to perfect it. My three-year-old is more than happy to be both my helper and my taste tester. Today he asked for a “baby cookie;” he likes the teeny, tiny ones the best. After a bite he told me, “Mama makes the best chocolate chip cookies.” Guys, I’m not even kidding my heart swelled. I felt like I achieved some life goal I didn’t even know I had. Now I know why Monica Geller from “Friends” tried SO hard to recreate Phoebe’s grandma’s recipe because being the mom who makes the best chocolate chip cookies is a serious accomplishment. That’s a moment I’ll remember forever. So this chocolate chip cookie recipe is pretty special. It’s going to be a family secret to pass down for generations now that we have a hard copy. We can plan adorable outfits, Pinterest worthy activities, and all of the other things that we think will create special memories for our kids. But we’re making memories every single day, in the ordinary things. We can’t pick out what our children will remember from their childhood. We’re making memories all the time, in the littlest ways, without even realizing it in the moment. Now I have my own chocolate chip cookie memory with my great-grandmother’s recipe, that’s pretty neat if you ask me. Food plays a huge role in our lives. We connect it to people and memories. Some of my best memories are connected to things I baked and cooked with my grandma. My mom remembers her grandma's chocolate chip cookies, but the exact recipe is long gone (if it was ever written down). I set out to channel my inner Monica Geller-Bing by recreating the recipe to my mom's description and taste. |
Love Through Food
We use food to show sympathy when someone goes through a hard time. We use it for celebrations through birthday cakes and favorite dinners. Our favorite foods are often linked to the person who cooked them, who we shared them with, or a happy memory. Archives
